This workshop is for intermediate to advanced beekeepers who want the ability to rear queens for their own use all year round.  Learn the theory behind and practice the art of queen rearing – with hands-on application of grafting newly hatched larvae right up to planting the sealed queen cell into mating nucleus hives.

Knowing how to rear Queen Bees can be beneficial in keeping bee hives perpetual young and maximising the amount of honey extracted. Allan has been rearing Queen Bees for over 25 years, and keeping bees for more than double that.

This workshop is suitable for any Hobbyist, Registered Beekeeper interested in learning how to rear Queen Bees for their own use only.

Students receive a Folder and also 8 different stages of original video that clearly outlines the “TEK” system for rearing quality queens.  The folder aligns with the theory tutorials that students participate in each morning, before the practical components are attempted.

IT IS A REQUIREMENT OF ENROLMENT THAT YOU ARE A REGISTERED BEEKEEPER – AND YOU MUST HAVE KEPT BEES FOR AT LEAST ONE COMPLETE SEASON.

– Students are to complete a Level 3 Entry Test (theory) before booking is accepted – Level 3 is an advanced workshop!
– Once payment is made, you will be provided with the level 3 entry test. You must achieve 100% on the Level 3 Entry test to have your booking confirmed. You may attempt the test as many times as required.

A Brief Overview of the practical components of the Workshop:

– The workshop to run Practical and Theory components: – 2 days (Saturdays) of about 5 – 6 hours – full on
– The workshop is limited to a maximum number of 10 persons with 2 Instructors

Day 1 Practical –

– Opening the hives to remove hatched eggs for grafting

– Opening the queen mother hive for placement of Cell Bar
– Students shown how to graft with the Chinese Grating Tool and then actual grafts by students
– Students shown the Jenter unit, how to use it and then actual use by students
– After cell bar completed the bar placed in queen-less hive

– On site – preparing the Nuces, Queen-less to receive cell the following week

Day 2 Practical –

– Checking of cell bar for numbers of taken queen cells
– Checking for and Destroying Rogue Queen Cells
– Placement of sealed cells in the prepared Nuces, previous week

Level 3 Entry Test

Conditions of Enrolment

– Students must be a registered beekeeper with their state DPI
– Students must be actively keeping bees and have done so for a minimum of one season
– Enrolled students must not be rearing queen bees for public sale
– Students must achieve 100% on entry test

Allergy Advice

Honey Bees sting. It's very hard to avoid it.

Any person with a KNOWN and SERIOUS allergy to bee stings, honey, propolis or pollen does not meet the minimum requirements to attend this workshop.

Please consult a General Practitioner for more information.

Suitable for:

Any one aged 18 or over who is currently registered as a beekeeper and is actively keeping bees and has done so for at least one complete season.

Good eyesight is required to fully participate in this workshop, so be sure to bring your glasses or a magnifying glass if needed!

Registration and Orientation 8.45am SHARP.

Theory Start: 9am until 12pm
Lunch Break (BYO): 12pm – 12.30pm
Practical Component: 12.30pm until 3pm.

Tea and Coffee Facilities will be available.

Students will be advised 14 days prior to day one of exact address.

Items Required

1. Pen (that writes) , clipboard folder for writing on, camera and lots of questions!
2. Full Protective Gear (whole body) – All gear must be perfectly clean (esp. gloves if being used)
3. Hat, Sunglasses, water, snacks and lunch

14 days prior to Day 1 or less: No Refund (or Full Credit for Next Available Workshop)

NO REFUND or part refunds available for missing one or more days of a multi-day workshop.

Liability Waiver

By purchasing an enrolment into any 'Beekeeping Workshop by "TEK", the enrolled student automatically indemnifies ALL INSTRUCTORS and THE APIARY SITES LAND OWNERS from any and all types of injury, loss or damage to property whilst attending the Beekeeping Workshops including travelling to and from.

Students must be aware that bee stings affect all people differently and that the symptoms can change between stings. It is inherent that every enrollee declares, to their best knowledge that they are not allergic to bee stings or honey bee products.
